LONG A RESIDENT OF WELLAND  
Elias H. Burgar Called to His Reward-Well Known and Much Respected in Welland 

             Elias H. Burgar, who had been a resident of Welland for forty-three years, died at his home, Albina street, on Friday, at the age of 69 years, after an illness extending over six months. Mr. Burgar was very well known in Welland, respected by all who knew him as one of a kind and generous heart. He occupied a prominent place in public life in Welland before the greater Welland became known, occupying seats in the town council and the public school board for a number of years. His last illness lasted since December, when he was afflicted with nervous trouble which came on as a result of an accident, years ago.

            The late Mr. Burgar was born in Pelham sixty-nine years ago in September, the son of James and Ruth Burgar.  There he lived till he moved to Erie, Pa., for a few years. On returning to Pelham in 1873 he was married to Mary Curry of Erie, Pa. After his marriage he moved to Welland and had since lived here. During the time he spent in Welland he conducted a shoe store for a number of years on the site of Riverside Mills. He retired from active business life, and later was engineer at the waterworks pump house for some years. Five years ago he retired from all business to live on Albina street.

             Besides his widow he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Archibald Farr and Mrs. Allan Ray of Wainfleet, and one brother, James, of Colorado. J.H. Burgar of Welland and Geo. H. Burgar of Toronto are cousins of the late Mr. Burgar. Four children, two sons and two daughters predeceased him.

             The funeral was held from his late residence, Albina street, on Monday afternoon at two o’clock. The services were conducted by the Rev. Thos. Cowan and interment was made at the Friends church cemetery in Pelham. The pallbearers were W.H. Crowther, W.H. Lowe, L. Hogue, L. Racher, W. learn and Alex Robins.

EX-ALDERMAN OF WELLAND DIES
Elias Burgar Passes Away at 69 Years of Age

             One of the makers of Welland passed away on Friday at noon, when the death occurred of Elias Burgar, Albina street. Deceased was born in Pelham 69 years ago, the son of the late James and Ruth Burgar. Forty-two years ago he married Mary Curry, also of Pelham, and they then became residents of Welland. For a number of years deceased conducted a retail boot and shoe business here and subsequent to that was foreman in charge of the construction of town improvements, sewers, walks etc., for a long time. For some years now he has lived retired. He had been ill for about four years, principally as a result of an accident 15 years ago, from which he never fully recovered. He served many terms in both town council and public school board. By his sterling honesty and integrity and his kindly disposition, he won the highest esteem and respect of all with whom he came in contact. In politics he was a life-long Liberal and he was a former past master of Merritt Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and Willson Chapter, R.A.M. A very wide circle of warm friends will mourn his demise. Besides his widow he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. A. Fowler of Wainfleet and Mrs. Allan Rae of Pelham. Two sons and two daughters died in childhood.

             The funeral took place at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Service was conducted at his late residence by Rev. Mr. Cowan and interment was made in the Friend’s Cemetery, Pelham. The pall-bearers were:-W.H. Crowther, W.H. Lowe, L. Hogue, L. Racher, Wm. Learn and Alex Robins.

Mary E. Burgar

             Mrs. Mary E. Burgar, aged 72 years, wife of the late Elias Burgar, died in the Welland county hospital Sunday, after an illness of six weeks’ duration. She was removed to the hospital three weeks ago. Mrs. Burgar was one of the oldest citizens of this city having lived here almost all her life. She was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, and came to Welland when a young girl.

             She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Green of Erie, Pennsylvania. The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock for 77 Division street, to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic church and from there to Holy Cross cemetery, where interment will be made.
