ONE OF WELLAND’S PIONEERS PASSES AWAY

Jacob Ryan was Ill Only Three Days in His 90^th Year

WAS BORN IN WAINFLEET TWP.

              There passed away on Tuesday last, after three days’ illness, Jacob Ryan, one of Welland’s oldest and most respected residents. The death came as quite a shock to the community although the late Mr. Ryan was 89 years and 9 months old. He was born in Wainfleet Twp. on February 14, 1827, the son of John and Mary Ryan. At the age of nine he moved with his parents to Crowland, a few miles south of Welland, where he lived till the age of twenty. Welland at that time consisted of only a few log houses, north of the Chippawa Creek, over which there was only a plank bridge. When twenty years of age he came to Welland to work in the planing mill, owned then by a Mr. Sealey and standing on the site where now stands Round’s lumber mill. He was employed there for about ten years as a millwright. For two years he worked in _____Yonkers, Flint City, Salt Lake and Grand Rapids. In 1851 he was married in Buffalo to Rachael Bugner (Buchner) of Crowland, they resided in the residence now called the Barker House on Aqueduct Street. He lived through the MacKenzie Rebellion and the Fenian Raid. He helped to construct the present stone aqueduct which took three years to build and also the wooden one that was there before it. He was one of the charter members of the Masonic Lodge; it was he who helped to start it here. When the Beatty works was first founded in 1860, he was one of the first employees and has been with them till about eight years ago when failing health forced him to resign. He leaves to mourn him one brother, Walter Ryan of Buffalo; one sister, Mrs. Cornwall of St. Catharines; two children, Herbert Ryan of Buffalo and Mrs. Ostrander of Welland, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife departed this life just one year ago.
